Information and Guidelines
Performance Divisions:
  • All Performance Divisions will be based on grade and will be determined after registration, contingent on enrollment.

Eligibility:
  • At least one participant in each ensemble must be a member or intern of the Michibago Music Teachers Association, or a student of a member or intern of the Michibago Music Teachers Association to be entered at the standard entry fee.
  • If a potential participant does not belong to Michibago or study with a Michibago teacher, a $25 teacher fee must be paid, along with the regular student entry fee. This teacher fee allows the teacher to enter as many of his/her students as he/she wishes. All participating teachers will be expected to volunteer the day of the festival.
  • Teachers may participate as accompanists or ensemble participants; however, there is no solo category for a teacher who has already graduated from college.

Repertoire:
  • Kindergarten–Adult: Any music written by a composer of color (non-Caucasian). Spanish composers are considered Caucasian, but not Latin American composers. So Latin American and Asian composers are also acceptable.
  • Music can be written by a known or unknown composer, historical or contemporary.
  • Students must learn from an original, published score
  • A list of possible, but non-conclusive, titles and sources will be available on google drive as way of suggestion.
  • Arrangements and transcriptions are allowed.
  • Any instrument or voice, either accompanied or unaccompanied, either solo, duet or ensemble.
  • Memorization is encouraged but not required.
  • All performers must bring an original score for the adjudicator, with each measure numbered. If music is not memorized, a second original score must be used by the performer.
  • Photocopies may be used for performance or to help with page turns, as long as the original score is also present.
  • One instrument accompanying the other should be classified as a solo, not a duet or ensemble.
  • Students may play one or more movements of a multi-movement work
  • If a teacher is unsure whether a composer or composition qualifies, please contact Shelba DeMaster (920-918-5401, mrsdpiano@gmail.com)

Entry fee:
  • $20.00 per solo, duet or ensemble. Fee(s) for each event entered (solo, ensemble) should be paid to the teacher, who will submit all studio applications together with one check covering the entry fees of each student.
  • Students may enter one solo with each instrument they study. They may also enter one duet with each instrument, plus one ensemble. (If there is a question about this, contact the chairs.)

Applications:
  • Applications will be available on the MMTA google drive in September, and due October 21, 2022.
  • Mail one check covering the entry fees of all events and a brief summary of your entries to MMTA Treasurer, Beverly Barnes Mark, 2020 41st St, Two Rivers, WI 54241
  • Application Deadline: October 21, 2022

Location:
  • Lakeland College, located west of Howards Grove, on Cty. M, a quarter mile north of County A
  • Registration will be in the Verhulst Building. Warm up rooms will also be available in Verhulst.
  • Exact times and locations will be announced after all applications have been received.
  • Because of the nature of this festival, time requests cannot be honored.

Format of the Festival:
  • Students will be required to come for a 20-30 minute period of time, or until all Division participants have played.
  • A group of students will enter the performance room and stay for that period of time, listening to others play and playing their piece at the appointed time.
  • If a student is needed to play in another room during that time, arrangements will be made for the student to leave.
  • There will be a room monitor and a teacher in the performance room to handle logistics.
  • Results will continue to be posted at the end of each Division’s performances.
  • Each participant will be adjudicated by a qualified professional.
  • The Honors Recital will be held at the end of the day in the Bradley Fine Arts Building (exact time to be announced).
  • Both the competition and the Honors Recital are open to the public.
  • All first and second place winners will play in the Honors Recital at the end of the day. If a student cannot attend the Honors Recital, he/she may not be named a first or second place winner. Also, please indicate on the application form if he/she cannot attend the Recital.
  • In divisions with a small number of entrants, the judge is not required to designate a winner.
  • Results will be posted after each category is done.
  • All decisions of the judge are final and to be accepted with good sportsmanship.
  • All participants will receive a certificate of participation and winners, 2nd place, and honorable mentions will receive award seals.
